Medi-gap and Medicare Supplementing
55Medicare- Should you Supplement the Gaps?
I am sure that you get plenty of mail from various companies aiming to give you the best supplemental coverage for medicare possibly attainable, however it can be quite confusing to distinguish viable options with those that are well- a crock if you know what I mean. So what do you do and do you even need supplemental coverage? Perhaps, but first you have to get to the bottom of it all by taking into account your present health, future health care needs, and your personal circumstances. However, do not forget that anything can happen at anytime. Yes, a bit complex! Let me help break it down to the basics.
I was recently reading an article on Medicare.gov that responded to this very predicament with a brief explanation, however as we all have come to recognize it may not be this easy- or is it? First of all, there are various plans that Medicare gives such as Part A, Part B, and so on and so forth. Every plan indicates different coverages of different elements in health care coverage. It could take hours to read all the terms, conditions, and clauses without even conducing anything solid as far as your coverage limitations and liabilities. So it boils down in finding the discrepancies within your plan and locating the gaps in comparison to your immediate health care coverage needs.
For instance- your losing your hearing. Now Medicare policies may allow for prosthetics as far as rebuilding an eardrum sustained by an injury or accident, but in the same retrospect hearing impairment caused by degeneration and general aging do not qualify for hearing aids (which are generally categorized as prosthetic devices.) Ironic or just plain ridiculous? Well there is nothing that can be done about that other than to supplement the incompetency of the Medicare plan. So back to the initial subject matter.
There are explicit gaps in Medicare policies such a the one spoke about above. The various companies that are soliciting you to acquire their insurance services claim that they will cover the medical costs that neither Medicare plans will cover with their policies. There are many pros and cons to acquiring a medi-gap policy. First, you must find a legit and reputable company to obtain this kind of coverage from. This may be the hard part. The wisest action that you can take in regards to this is to simply research the credibility of the companies in comparison to their various rates, and do an incredible amount of comparison shopping.
There is also the terms required by the medi-gap company that mandate that you have both a Medicare Part A and Part B plan before qualifying for their coverage. This means you will be paying for the Part B premium and a separate premium to whatever medi-gap insurance company you have opted for. The next disadvantage is that if you are married, you and your spouse have to take out separate policies. The best part about supplemental insurance is that most of these companies are in compliance by offering the same coverages.
So thats about it in a nutshell, but there is so much more complexity about it that noone really undertands. The most crucial action you can take is to identify your needs and consider the status of your health and your financial circumtances. Make your decision based upon all these factors and you will be just fine....
